INFLUENZA (FLU)

QUICK LINKS

ABOUT

Influenza (also known as the flu) is a respiratory illness caused by flu viruses that can spread easily from person to person. Influenza can cause mild to severe illness. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, headache, extreme tiredness, runny or stuffy nose, or muscle aches. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea can also occur, more often in children than adults.

A flu vaccine is prepared annually based on which strains of influenza are anticipated to predominantly circulate. Vaccination does not guarantee someone will not get the flu. However, annual influenza vaccination has additional benefits including reduced severity of flu illness and reduced risks of flu-associated hospitalization and death.
